The Pursuit of Excellence

When conversations in business circles turn to the subject of growth, I often hear people say, “If you’re not growing, you’re dying.” While I appreciate the positive intent behind that sentiment, I respectfully disagree.

I believe that if you’re not improving, you’re dying. And I’d take that idea one step further: if you’re not pursuing excellence, you’re dying.

There will be times when a company may not experience growth for reasons beyond its control. But even during those seasons, it can continue improving and pursuing excellence. It’s a subtle shift, but the difference in mindset is meaningful. At ProVia, we intentionally shift our focus from growth to excellence.

If we consistently pursue excellence and growth follows, that’s certainly a good thing. But when excellence is the goal, it becomes a driving force that elevates every part of the organization, not just revenue.

One example of an outcome of pursuing excellence is quality. Even during a season when traditional measures may show little or no growth, an organization can make investments in improving quality. Over time, these investments pay dividends because higher quality enables us to better serve our customers. This creates lasting value, even when the spreadsheets may show a temporary pause in sales growth.

Another example of the pursuit of excellence is our Million Mile Club, which honors ProVia drivers who log one million consecutive safe driving miles. Pictured above is driver Rowan Miller returning safely to our Strasburg facility after reaching this remarkable milestone. We celebrate these drivers and their commitment to safety because there is no greater accomplishment than returning home safely to the people who matter most. Their dedication benefits not only their families, friends and coworkers, but also everyone who shares the road with them. To me, this is excellence in action.
